Almost one in three Australian’s are obese. In other words, an astonishing 29%, or 5.2 million adult Australians. One third of this number are women. But just in case you missed it, those figures do not include the Australians who fall into the overweight category. Put simply, a quarter of our Aussie kids and 60% of our adults are overweight or obese. This is a massive 80% increase in the last 33 years. Australia is now one of the world’s fattest nations, with the second highest growth in worldwide obesity rates.
How are these figures measured I hear you asking? They’re calculated using the Body Mass Index (BMI), the most useful population-level measure, where:

According to the Australian Heart Foundation, your waist measurement is comparable to the BMI, and is considered a better indicator of your risk of developing chronic disease. For most adults, a waist measurement of greater than 94 cm for men and 80 cm for women is representative of internal fat deposit levels, coating the heart, kidneys, liver and pancreas.
So why am I banging on about it? Simply because correctly applied hypnosis and hypnotherapy is scientifically proven to aid weight loss by increasing motivation and helping rebuild new habits. But I’m not going to provide you with the research, or influence you in any way, because if you care, you will Google it for yourself.
My other concerns include government budget cuts to prevention programs, impact of the co-payment scheme, soaring private health insurance costs, peddling of expensive and ineffective gizmos, remedies and pills, saturation of targeted advertising by major food corporations and the burden on our already stretched hospital, ambulance and other dwindling health services.
We all know the primary cause of obesity and weight gain is a too high caloric intake, maybe from overeating, junk food, take away, and/or alcohol, and a decrease of physical activity for whatever reason. Stress and lack of sleep also play a role. What you should understand is that this preventable condition has overtaken smoking as the leading cause of premature death and illness in Australia. We all know, or know of, someone affected.
The most common consequences of adult obesity are cardiovascular disease (heart disease and stroke), diabetes, chronic kidney disease, musculoskeletal disorders (especially osteoarthritis), and some cancers (colon, breast, endometrial). But what about the kids who learn from modelling adult behaviours? Childhood obesity increases likelihood of obesity, premature death and disability in adulthood, but in their early years, obese children may expect breathing difficulties, asthma, sleep apnoea, higher risk of fractures, hypertension, and early indicators of cardiovascular disease, insulin resistance and psychological impacts.
